Symptomatic Relief Treatment

Symptomatic relief is the most frequent reason people seek out chiropractic care. It's also one of the most misunderstood reasons. Our body uses symptoms to communicate that something is wrong, pain, or other complaints, such as insomnia, digestive problems, or headaches. When these symptoms are severe enough or last long enough, they can be considered diseases. When symptoms disappear due to receiving chiropractic care, most people feel better and are pleased with their treatment.

Symptoms vs. Diseases

Doctors have laboratories and x-ray machines in the medical model to discover what is wrong when someone comes in with a symptom. They then treat the disease with drugs or surgery. This is sometimes called the "defect model" of healthcare, as medical doctors like to treat some part of the body that is not working correctly.

Chiropractic philosophy holds that a person is an integrated whole. Chiropractors believe that the cause of disease and symptoms is due to spinal subluxations (misalignments). The chiropractor's role is to find and correct these misalignments, thus allowing the body's own innate ability to heal itself. Doctors who use this philosophy are more open to trying different, less invasive types of care before resorting to drugs or surgery.

Why should I see a chiropractor for Symptomatic Relief?

When a spinal subluxation is corrected, the body heals by removing interference to the nervous system. In other words, when there is less interference to the brain and spinal cord, "communication" between these two becomes clear again, and the body can resume normal function. When this occurs, symptoms disappear because Subluxations cause a disruption in the nervous system, which results in interference with communication.

Symptoms are one way your body tells you that something is wrong and needs attention. Many people ignore their symptoms, thinking they will go away if they wait long enough or take over-the-counter pain relievers.

Other common examples would be menstrual cramps, headaches, and lower back pain. All of these can be treated with chiropractic care.

The way your body communicates with you is that there is nothing else wrong with you when a symptom goes away.
